The 6 1/2 inch width are for standard railings with a circumference of
7 1/2 inches to 9 inches.
The 4 1/2 inch width is for narrower railings with a circumference of
5 1/2 inches to 7 inches.

The cover is secured to your banister with hook and loop straps and stays anchored between stair spindles, newel posts, and wall mounts.
